Information about Vulcan XM597

XM597 took part in two missions in the Falklands Conflict armed with the Shrike anti-radar missile on both missions. These were attached under the wings on the hard points originally designed for the cancelled Skybolt missile, the bomb bay had extra fuel tanks added.
The aircraft and crew came to the public notice when during an air to air refuel on the return leg of the second mission, the refuelling probe fractured and left the pilot with the choice to ditch or head for the nearest vaguely friendly country, the choice made was Brazil and they then landed at Rio de Janeiro with one missile still attached and a very small quantity of fuel.
The aircraft and crew were impounded to be released at a later date to return home.
XM597 was also the first Vulcan in service to be fitted with the ARI 18228 radar warning system (fitted to its tail fin)

The photographs show the mission markings on the nose relating to the Falklands Conflict and the marking put on the aircraft during its stay on Ascension Island.

The Avro Blue Steel thermonuclear stand off bomb, used to equip the V force, is depicted on its trolley inside one of the East Fortune hangars.
